What is a procedure room — how is it different from a hospital theatre?
A procedure room is a purpose-built medical room designed for minor surgical procedures — fully equipped with surgical lighting, sterile fields, and appropriate monitoring equipment, but without the enormous fixed cost of a hospital operating theatre. Hospital theatres require a full team of theatre nurses, scrub technicians, anaesthesiologists, recovery ward staff, and facility overhead that add thousands of dollars to every procedure. For procedures that don’t require this level of infrastructure — like hernia repair under local anaesthetic — a procedure room delivers the same surgical environment at a fraction of the cost.
Is the quality of surgery the same as a private hospital?

Yes — a GP referral is required for all MSQ Health Same Day Surgery procedures. This ensures continuity of care between your primary care provider and our surgical team. When are procedures available?
MSQ Health Same Day Surgery procedures are primarily scheduled on Saturdays — 1 to 2 sessions per month at each location. This is deliberate: it means most patients don’t need to take time off work. Weekday appointments may also be available depending on location and demand — contact our team to discuss your preferred timing. Slots are limited, so early enquiry is recommended.
Is health insurance accepted?
Yes — Southern Cross health insurance is accepted at all MSQ Health Same Day Surgery locations. NIB and UniMed are also accepted. We recommend confirming your specific surgical cover with your insurer before your assessment appointment. Our team will provide the procedure codes and documentation your insurer requires to process your claim.
