RECOGNISING DEPRESSION

Common Signs & Symptoms of Depression

Depression is more than feeling sad. It’s a clinical condition that affects how you think, feel, and function — and it can look very different from person to person.

🌫️

Persistent Low Mood

A pervasive feeling of sadness, emptiness, or hopelessness that lasts most of the day, nearly every day — and doesn’t lift the way ordinary sadness does.

Loss of Energy & Fatigue

Feeling exhausted even after rest; everything feels like an enormous effort. Simple tasks that were once easy — getting up, showering, cooking — feel overwhelming.

💔

Loss of Interest or Pleasure

Things that once brought joy — hobbies, relationships, food, socialising — feel flat, distant, or meaningless. This loss of pleasure is one of depression’s most telling signs.

🧠

Difficulty Thinking & Concentrating

Struggling to focus, make decisions, or remember things. A foggy, slowed-down feeling that affects work performance and everyday functioning.

😴

Sleep Disturbances

Either sleeping too much and still feeling exhausted, or lying awake unable to sleep. Disrupted sleep both causes and worsens depression — creating a painful cycle.

💭

Negative Thoughts & Worthlessness

Persistent feelings of guilt, worthlessness, or being a burden to others. In severe cases, thoughts of death or self-harm. These thoughts are symptoms — not the truth — and they respond to treatment.

Recognising symptoms is the first step. Depression is one of the most treatable mental health conditions — but most people wait too long before getting help. With MSQ Health, you can see a specialist within weeks. Get support now →

TREATMENT APPROACHES

Evidence-Based Condition Treatments

There is no single “right” treatment for depression. MSQ Health’s psychiatrists build personalised plans combining the most effective evidence-based approaches for each individual.

First Line

Medication & Psychiatric Management

Antidepressant medications, carefully selected and monitored by a consultant psychiatrist, remain one of the most effective tools for moderate-to-severe depression.

  • SSRIs, SNRIs and other antidepressant classes
  • Careful selection based on your individual profile
  • Regular review and medication optimisation
  • Management of co-occurring anxiety or other conditions
Highly Effective

Psychological Therapies

Structured talking therapies address the thought patterns and behaviours that maintain depression — producing lasting change beyond the active treatment period.

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
  • Interpersonal Therapy (IPT)
  • Behavioural Activation
  • Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT)
Advanced

Neuromodulation & Adjunct Therapies

For treatment-resistant depression and those seeking additional pathways, advanced therapies like rTMS and HBOT offer clinically supported options with strong evidence bases.

  • Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS)
  • Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)
  • Sleep, exercise and lifestyle optimisation
  • Nutritional and integrative approaches

MSQ HEALTH SERVICES

Treatments Available Through MSQ Health

Three powerful treatment pathways — each designed to complement one another and give you the best possible chance of sustained recovery.

Psychiatry Service

High-Pressure Oxygen Therapy

HBOT involves breathing pure oxygen in a pressurised chamber, dramatically increasing oxygen delivery to the brain and body tissues. Emerging research points to its potential in reducing neuroinflammation — a key factor increasingly linked to depression — and supporting neuroplasticity and mood regulation.

Used alongside psychiatric care as a complementary therapy, HBOT offers patients seeking an integrative approach an additional, well-supported option.

Non-Invasive Brain Stimulation for Depression

rTMS is one of the most significant advances in depression treatment in decades — a clinically proven, non-invasive therapy that uses focused magnetic pulses to stimulate the areas of the brain involved in mood regulation. It’s FDA-cleared for depression and recommended for patients where antidepressants haven’t provided sufficient relief.

Typically delivered over 4–6 weeks in-clinic. No anaesthetic, no systemic side effects, no downtime — you can drive home and carry on with your day.

Psychiatrists & Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners

Our core depression service — private access to consultant psychiatrists and experienced psychiatric nurse practitioners who specialise in mood disorders. From initial assessment through to medication management, therapy coordination, and ongoing care, you’ll have a specialist who truly knows your case.

Our clinicians have deep expertise in depression, including treatment-resistant presentations, postnatal depression, bipolar depression, and depression co-occurring with anxiety or other conditions.

COMMAN QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked Questions

Is depression really a medical condition, or just feeling sad?

Depression is a recognised medical condition — not a sign of weakness, laziness, or a character flaw. It involves measurable changes in brain chemistry, structure, and function. Like diabetes or heart disease, it responds to appropriate medical treatment. Feeling sad is a normal human emotion; depression is a clinical condition that persists, intensifies, and significantly impairs daily functioning.

Do I need a GP referral to see MSQ Health for depression

Yes, a GP referral is required to ensure continuity of care. If you don’t currently have a GP or haven’t yet spoken to one, our team can advise you on how to obtain a referral — contact us and we’ll guide you through the process as efficiently as possible.

How is a depression assessment different from seeing my GP

A GP assessment is an excellent first step, but a consultant psychiatrist brings specialist-level expertise to a depression assessment. They can identify subtypes of depression (e.g. bipolar depression, treatment-resistant depression, postnatal depression), review the full range of treatment options including medications GPs can’t prescribe, and build a comprehensive, tailored plan — particularly important if you’ve tried treatments before without full success.

What if I've already tried antidepressants and they haven't worked?

This is more common than people realise, and it doesn’t mean treatment can’t work for you. MSQ Health specialises in treatment-resistant depression. Our psychiatrists can review your medication history, adjust dosing or combinations, explore alternative medications, and — critically — assess your suitability for rTMS, which has strong evidence for people who haven’t responded to antidepressants.

What is rTMS and how does it help depression?

rTMS (Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) uses focused magnetic pulses to stimulate the parts of the brain involved in mood regulation — particularly the prefrontal cortex. It’s FDA-cleared for depression, non-invasive, and delivered over several weeks of in-clinic sessions. Around 60% of patients with treatment-resistant depression experience meaningful improvement with rTMS. There’s no anaesthetic, no systemic side effects, and no downtime.

Can I use my Southern Cross health insurance for depression treatment?

Yes. MSQ Health is an approved Southern Cross Easy-Claim provider, which means we process eligible claims directly at your appointment — no forms to complete, no reimbursement waiting. We recommend confirming your specific cover with Southern Cross before your appointment so you know exactly what to expect.

How soon can I get an appointment?

We typically offer appointments within a matter of weeks — significantly faster than the public system, where waits of 4–6 months or more are common for specialist psychiatric care. When you’re struggling with depression, weeks matters. Contact us today and we’ll find the earliest available option.

What if I'm in crisis right now

If you are in immediate danger or experiencing a mental health crisis, please contact emergency services (111) or a crisis line immediately. In New Zealand: call or text 1737 (free, 24/7), Lifeline on 0800 543 354, or Samaritans on 0508 828 865. MSQ Health provides planned care — for crisis support, please use the services above first, then contact us for ongoing specialist care.
