Who can diagnose ADHD in New Zealand?
In New Zealand, only psychiatrists (and sometimes paediatricians for children) can make a formal ADHD diagnosis for the purposes of treatment and prescribing medication. Psychologists can provide assessments and reports, but these generally need to be confirmed by a psychiatrist before treatment or medication can begin. At MSQ Health, all ADHD assessments are completed by consultant psychiatrists.

What is the process for an ADHD assessment?
An ADHD diagnosis begins with a psychiatric consultation, where your psychiatrist will review your medical history, symptoms, and overall mental health. If ADHD assessment is clinically appropriate, you’ll then have a structured ADHD evaluation that includes interviews, diagnostic tools, and history taking. This process ensures you receive a thorough and accurate diagnosis.
Can an online ADHD test confirm a diagnosis?
Online ADHD tests and self-screening tools can be helpful for recognising symptoms, but they cannot provide a diagnosis. A formal diagnosis can only be made by a psychiatrist (or paediatrician for children). At MSQ Health, our psychiatrists use standardised diagnostic tools and clinical interviews to confirm ADHD.
Do I need a GP referral for an ADHD assessment?
Yes. A GP referral is required for all new patients. This ensures continuity of care, allows your psychiatrist to understand your medical background, and helps rule out other conditions that may mimic ADHD symptoms.
How much is a private ADHD assessment in New Zealand?
The price of an ADHD assessment depends on the length and type of appointment recommended by your psychiatrist. We can provide you with an estimate once we receive your referral and information about your needs. Many patients see this as an important investment in their health, given the long-term benefits of clarity, diagnosis, and treatment.
Does Southern Cross cover ADHD assessments or psychiatry appointments?
MSQ Health is a recognised Southern Cross Easy-Claim Provider. If your policy includes psychiatric cover, we can process eligible claims on the spot with no paperwork. You’ll only need to pay any balance not covered by your policy.
Can I use health insurance from other providers?
Yes. If your insurer provides psychiatric cover, we can supply the documentation you need to submit a claim. Check with your provider for policy details.
Can psychiatrists prescribe ADHD medication in New Zealand?
Yes. If clinically appropriate, psychiatrists in New Zealand can prescribe ADHD medication such as stimulants or non-stimulants. Before medication is prescribed, standard medical checks may be required to ensure treatment is safe for you.
What conditions do MSQ psychiatrists treat apart from ADHD?
In addition to ADHD, our psychiatrists also provide diagnosis and treatment for mood disorders, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and other psychiatric conditions. We also provide forensic and medico-legal psychiatric assessments.
What happens if ADHD is not diagnosed?
If your psychiatrist does not confirm ADHD, they will provide recommendations for the next steps in your care. This may include support for another condition, referral to therapy, or monitoring over time.
Do you offer ADHD assessments by telehealth?
Yes. MSQ Health offers ADHD assessments nationwide via secure telehealth. This allows you to see an experienced psychiatrist without needing to travel.
Can I see a psychiatrist if I don’t live in Auckland or Wellington?
Yes. Our services are available nationwide through telehealth, so you can access care from anywhere in New Zealand.
